DINFOS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

An Executive Council meeting of the Indy Chapter of the DINFOS Alumni Association was held on February 19, 2005, at The Garrison at 11:00 AM.  Present were:

 

Jack Rubak, President

Tom Conrad

Mike Davis

Craig Ito

Helen Stritt

 

Jack Rubak opened the meeting by reporting the recent deaths of the following:

Col Billy Spangler, USA-Ret, called with news of the passing of Navy Captain J.B. Smith, age 92, a former DINFOS Assistant Commandant.

Bob Martens, a retired Navy Master Chief, who had been assigned to the DINFOS PA Department.

bullet

Hugh Orr, a retired Army Major who worked in DINFOS’ Oral Communications Department.

 

These agenda items were then discussed:

Bob Dittmer has been contacted about the Association’s not-for-profit status.  We are awaiting his reply.

A letter was received from Rod Hargo nominating Les Payne, a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter and a DINFOS IOBC graduate, to the DINFOS Alumni Association Hall of Fame.  The information on Mr. Payne will be presented at our next Alumni Association meeting, and we will also solicit other Hall of Fame nominees.  Hall of Fame criteria sheets will be distributed.  Also, a Hall of Fame criteria sheet will be sent to Bob Foster for posting on our website.

An article on DINFOS entitled “Video Boot Camp” written by a 1978 DINFOS Graduate and former US Navy photojournalist, Tom Patrick McAuliffe, was distributed. (See attached.)

LTC Chuck Ricks, USA-Ret, former Director of the DINFOS Broadcasting Department and Deputy Mayor of the city of Lawrence, has been on assignment as a civilian in Afghanistan.  Upon his return, we will line him up to speak at a future meeting on his experiences in Afghanistan.

The President distributed a letter received from a retired military officer about the Field of Valor section of Crown Hill Cemetery devoted to retired military personnel.  Tom Conrad will look into this as a possible secondary speaker at one of our meetings.

 

 

 

 

Names were solicited for a stellar speaker at our next Alumni Association meeting.  These names were suggested:

.  Mike Ahearn, retired TV Channel 8 news anchor

.  Joe Marsh with the American Legion

.  Don Lundy, manager of TV Channel 6 and a former DINFOS graduate

.  Bob Pritchert, a DINFOS alumni, who is a journalism instructor at Ball State.

.  Mel Sharpe, Chairman of the Ball State Journalism Department

.  Mike Davis will contact Mr. Boonhauer, an historian who is researching

   information on Grissom Air Force Base.  

 

A date for the next Alumni Association was set for April 9 but was later changed to April 16.

 

Tom Conrad asked about the status of establishing an Alumni Association at DINFOS Ft. Meade.  Dr. Rubak stated that an office at Ft. Meade has been set aside, and Col Hiram Bell, Commandant, will try to contact one of the former Chiefs of Public Affairs to help establish an alumni group in Washington DC.  Col Bell will be asked to give us an update for our April meeting.

 

The meeting adjourned at 1230 PM.
