The
twelfth meeting of the Indiana Chapter of the D1NFOS Alumni Association was
held at 8:30 am on February 13, 2000, at The Garrison at Ft. Harrison State
Park.
The
President opened the meeting by welcoming all attendees. All were asked to
introduce themselves. He extended thanks to Myriam Rath for her Valentine
decorations that made the room look so colorful.
The
President then turned the microphone over to Tom Conrad and Bob Dittmer who
introduced the panel members:
Phil
Bremen, Spokesperson for Governor Frank O’Bannon, Jim Shella, WISH-TV Reporter, State House Reporter and moderator of “Indiana in
Review.”
Frank
Wilson, former report for the Indianapolis Times and Indianapolis Star and
Spokesperson for Citizens Gas Company.
John
Schwantes, Public Affairs Editor of the Indianapolis Star, was scheduled as one
of the panel members, but he was unable to attend.
Bob
Diftmer served as the moderator. Their topics ranged from their experiences on
reporting in the last century and what might be expected in the new century. The
development of computer technology was the major change in the 2O~” Century.
They discussed items ranging from the White River pollution to the investigation
of the License Branches. They expressed the need for honesty in reporting. As
one of them said, “If you tell the truth, you’ll never have to try to
remember what you said.”
After
the discussion, the panel members answered questions. All of the breakfast attendees were very impressed with the panel, dubbing it as “the best program
we’ve ever had.”
The
President mentioned the excellent support we’ve had from Colonel Icenogle. He
is always willing to share what’s going on at the school with us. He has
extended an invitation for us to take a look at the new school A copy of his
DINFOS Update is on each of the tables. As you will see, the school has resumed
running the “Thomas Jefferson Awards Program” and the “Military
Photographer of the Year Program.”
Further,
Dr. Ken Andersen, former Chairman of the Speech Department at the University of
Illinois, convened a committee to discuss a “Credo” to be put into effect.
They stressed the need for sensitivity and that there are ethical dimensions to
all communication. A copy of the paper he prepared has been distributed, and a
copy of the “Credo” the committee prepared will be distributed at the next
meeting.
The
meeting adjourned at 1115 am. The
next breakfast will be in June.
